I think we need to combine the work that Tatum does with the understanding we got from Maisha Winn’s reading on literacy spaces, arts and the African Diaspora movement. I think Tatum argues that a lineage was broken that must be restored. Winn reminds us there always was a lineage but it wasn’t always the discourses we favored in schools.
